Healthcare in the DRC

During a trip to the DRC in 2014 we realised there was a huge need for increased healthcare provision. Whilst this is not a localised issue we were particularly drawn to the town of Kasindi on the Congo-Uganda border where the population had increased by around 30% due to the number of Internally Displaced People (IDP's) flooding in from the villages.

Having done some research and consulted with local health officials and church pastors we drew up some basic plans to develop an exisitng clinic into a small health clinic on a new plot of land. In April 2015 we ran a fundraising campaign and raised over £20,000 towards the building and a further £10,000 to support the staff costs for the first 3 years. A plot of land was purchased in October 2015.

In partnership with UK charity New Hope, we intend to build a 6 patient maternity ward, a 12 patient inpatient ward, outpatients ward, delivery room, surgical room, drug store and laboratory facility. Once completed we will charge patients $5 for delivery and $1 for a consultation, this is half the price of the local government hospital, with whom we have good relations. Here is a plan of the layout for the new health centre.

We are now commencing the early phases of the building work and planning ahead for the later phases. James Sloan, went to Congo in early April to meet with local health officials, dignitaries and church leaders to agree on the final design of the clinic. We are extremely excited about the impact of this clinic and it's ability to serve the area of Kasindi and beyond!
